APC Wins "Best Places to Work in Rhode Island" Award

Advanced Pharmacy Concepts (APC) was selected as one of the Top 40 companies in the Best Places to Work in Rhode Island competition for 2012. 

The award is designed to recognize employers in various size categories throughout Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts that are divided into three groups based on the number of employees - large employers were those with 150 or more local (Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts) employees, medium employers had between 50 and 149 local workers and small employers had 15 to 49 employees. The winners were chosen based on responses to a management questionnaire as well as a confidential employee survey.

SXC Acquires CatalystRx

On April 18, 2012, SXC Health Solutions announced the purchase of Catalyst Health Solutions for about $4.4 billion in cash and stock.  Both companies, each of which have held mid-market positions,  have expanded recently through acquisition, with SXC completing the acquisition of HealthTrans in January, and CatalystRx  having acquired another PBM, Walgreens Health Initiative just the past summer. 

The combination of the two companies positions SXC to compete with the larger PBMs: CVS/Caremark and Express Scripts.  Express Scripts won approval in April to acquire Medco, which will create a PBM that will handle about 30% of the prescription market in the United States.  More information is available in this MarketWatch article.

New Promotions at Advanced Pharmacy Concepts

Advanced Pharmacy Concepts (APC) is pleased to announce the promotions of several key members of the team as a result of our continued success and growth in the pharmacy benefit consulting industry. 

Mary T. Ross has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer and will have direct responsibility for the day to day operations of the Audit Services and Consulting Services business units, the latter of which also includes the Clinical Services team.  She will play a key role in the design and execution of operational efficiencies that will enhance the customer experience and optimize new product development. Mary joined APC in 2004 and brings over 20 years of valuable experience in the health care field, including ten years working for major PBM organizations.  Prior to her new role, Mary had overall responsibility for APC Consulting and Clinical Services as well as APC Government Programs.  Mary holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from Providence College and an MBA with a concentration in Statistics from the University of Rhode Island.

Amanda P. Gallagher has been promoted to Director of Consulting Services, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer.  In her new role as a member of the executive team, Amanda will be responsible for the consultants and clinical pharmacists involved in a wide variety of engagements ranging from request for proposal (RFP) projects for pharmacy benefit manager services to outsourced clinical support for managed care organizations.  Prior to joining the company, Amanda spent 13 years career in the specialty pharmacy industry at BioScrips where she held multiple client-facing roles with increasing responsibility involving account management, client implementations, new business and product development.  Amanda holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rhode Island and is currently completing her Masters in Health Care Administration at Cambridge College.

John Smith has been promoted to the Interim Director of Information Technology Services.  John joined Advanced Pharmacy Concepts in 2000 as an auditor and has assumed roles of increasing responsibility as the company has continued to grow.  He has overall management accountability for data management and analytical services as well as maintaining our compliance with HIPAA and HITECH security standards.  Prior to joining Advanced Pharmacy Concepts, John held several positions with ProMark/M.I.M./Scrips Pharmacy Solutions, a PBM and specialty pharmacy firm. During his tenure with ProMark/M.I.M./Scrip Pharmacy Solutions, John conducted data analysis for manufacturer rebate contracting, administration and allocation to clients including partial automation of the process.  John later moved to the clinical department where he was responsible for data management for all clinical and management projects.  Prior to entering the healthcare field John worked in the financial services industry as a short term funds manager and project accountant for Old Stone Bank.

Mark J. Anderson Named Director of Audit Services

North Kingstown, RI, October 6, 2011:  Advanced Pharmacy Concepts is pleased to announce the promotion of Mark Anderson to the position of Director for the Audit Services practice within the firm.  Mr. Anderson will lead a team of professionals who provide comprehensive pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) contract compliance audit expertise including pharmacy claims pricing analysis, benefit design and claim edit adjudication accuracy as well as rebate administration evaluations.  Under his leadership, the Audit Services practice will continue to extend its reach into key market segments including managed care organizations, Medicare Part D plan sponsors, self-insured employer groups, state government agencies and Taft-Hartley funds.

Mr. Anderson brings over 21 years of auditing experience from both the health care and financial services industries.  He spent over 15 years with BioScrips in roles of increasing responsibility within the internal audit operation.  At BioScrips, Mr. Anderson was instrumental in the development and implementation of internal standards related to Sarbanes-Oxley regulations for the infusion, mail order and PBM business units.  He is also an Accredited Health Care Fraud Investigator (AHFI) and managed a fraud investigation team that conducted approximately 300 on-site audits per year.  Prior to his tenure at BioScrips, Mr. Anderson held positions in auditing and treasury operations with prestigious financial services institutions including Fleet Bank (now Bank of America), Citizens Bank of Rhode Island (a RBS subsidiary) and State Street Bank and Trust.

Mr. Anderson holds a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island.  He is also a member of the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association and is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

TRICARE Awards Contract for TPharm4 Initiative to Advanced Pharmacy Concepts

The TRICARE Management Activity (TMA) has awarded Advanced Pharmacy Concepts a three-year contract to assist in the development of acquisition strategy alternatives and final recommendations for improvements to the TRICARE Pharmacy program.  The initiative is a major commitment by the Department of Defense toward developing the future pharmacy benefit for military personnel and their dependents with the intent of maintaining or possibly enhancing the capabilities of the program within the military health system (MHS).

TRICARE is the US Department of Defense (DoD) health care plan that provides comprehensive health care services to uniformed active duty and reserve personnel, their families and retirees that is available worldwide.  The TPharm program provides access to prescription drug benefits through a multi-channel delivery system, including retail pharmacies, mail service home delivery pharmacy and specialty pharmacies for high cost disease therapies.  Advanced Pharmacy Concepts will leverage its extensive experience in pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) operations and program design to guide TRICARE toward improved efficiencies and cost savings opportunities for this important component of the military health care delivery system.
