States Crack Down on Fake Insurance Plans
$1 million made available from HHS to help oversee insurance rate increases.
Our Take: Grants were awarded to all but five states, and are intended to increase public access to information about rate hikes and facilitate the hiring of experts to review rate increase proposals. As for the fake insurance plans; 24 states are getting support from the Federal Trade Commission as opportunists capitalize on the confusion surrounding reform by selling "medical discount plans." Further complicating the landscape in insurance offerings is the availability of and controversy surrounding limited benefit health policies as featured in this Kaiser Health News article.
